Beautifully written and a moving story, however it does have one of my least favorite themes which is a parent abandoning their child. I can never turn off my brain and just let myself enjoy when that is present in a book. For some reason I can feel sympathy for a lot of effed up characters but someone who abandons their kid fails to be humanized for me. It’s not even personal!! I was never abandoned!! But alas I will always be bitter towards a character that leaves their kid no matter how good of a reason they have (which iris did not have a good reason really but maybe better she left a child she didn’t love then stay and make everyone miserable??? Idk it’s not that serious there are fictional characters)

It took me a while to get into the story and get used to the frequent changes in perspective, but I'm glad I kept reading! The character development is very strong, and the way the author weaves in U.S. history with the multigenerational story of two Black families of different class backgrounds felt really organic and never forced or didactic.

What a beautiful book - the writing is so poetic and heartfelt it blew me away. It touches on so many difficult topics but in an incredibly sensitive way, I was swept away and heartbroken all at the same time.
