lots of flowery language

This book, like the first one and the novella, is filled with purple prose. Lots of internal monologuing. While there are some beautiful quotes in this book, some parts literally make no sense and our total fluff. The plot doesn’t seem to go very far per book. There’s so much repetition, as well. I feel like it’s gonna take me forever to get through these books because the plot is moving so slow. I don’t know if I’ll make it through the series. Also, the FMC was insane by the end of the book. I am completely empathetic towards what she has gone through in her short life so far and of all of her feelings. I think they’re more then valid. That doesn’t bother me much most of the time. What bothers me is her lack of communication and keeping secrets that put dozens if not hundreds of innocent lives at risk. Whenever she does something completely moronic, I have to remind myself that she’s just 17 and literally has no interpersonal skills because of her trauma. But man does she act like a moron sometimes.

Examples:

“Synonyms know each other like old colleagues, like a set of friends who’ve seen the world together. They swap stories, reminisce about their origins and forget that though they are similar, they are entirely different, and though they share a certain set of attributes, one can never be the other. Because a quiet night is not the same as a silent one, a firm man is not the same as a steady one, and a bright light is not the same as a brilliant one because the way they wedge themselves into a sentence changes everything.”

“My fists are full of unlucky pennies and my heart is a jukebox demanding a few nickels and my head is flipping quarters heads or tails heads or tails heads or tails heads or tails”

I want to love the idea of this series but find the characters just impossible. Juliette spends all her time describing everything in this abstract poetry but it’s always things happening to or around her. She so rarely does anything and when she does, it’s usually cry. Adam got even more frustrating in this book, but I did enjoy more of Kenji. Not sure I’m going to put more time into this series.

this was so amazing. tahereh’s writing is poetic but not hard to read. i want to highlight half of the words. will definitely be going back one day to annotate this. i knew i was in for a rollercoaster when i was crying less than 100 pages in. emotional wreckage.

“I can love him, but I can’t depend on him to be my backbone. I can’t be my own person if I constantly require someone else to hold me together.” I couldn’t put this book down, read it all in a whole day. The plot is so addicting, like you just HAVE to know how the story continues. Kenji is my favorite character. We see a different, more serious side of him and start to wonder about his life before he met Juliette. We see more of Warner and his love for Juliette genuinely makes you root for him to be end game. Adam, sweet, Adam. He’s perfect, but there’s something about Warner who only has a soft spot for Juliette that makes him so more appealing. Also….we will NOT talk about the “Adam incident”. I threw my book at the wall. Anywho, read this book, read this series. You have too.
