I got a little frustrated with this book and all of its jumping around, lack of character development and inconsistencies. And then I had to remember that this book wasn't written for a 2014 audience, eager to learn about slavery from a distance. Instead it was written in 1853, with the goal of portraying the evils of slavery to listening whites, while moving them to end it and not just feel guilty about it. It is an important book, and excels at its goal even if not very well-written.

"The big bee flies high
The little bee makes the honey;
The black folks make the cotton
And the white folks get the money"
I quite liked it. All the stories are supposedly true, some were witnessed by the author some just heard by him. It shows how slaves were treated, how was their life. Some chapters are more interesting than other but all readable. Only some chapters are about Clotel many have different stories in them.
