This is the first published book I’ve read in five months! It was okay. It had a slow start, but it did get really engaging towards the end. The ending was unsatisfactory, and the plot twist I guessed would’ve been better than what actually happened, but it was supposed to be unsatisfactory so I can’t be too upset at it.
My gripes: it does try a little too hard to be the “quirky mystery novel” and while some parts of it worked, I think it was too blunt in its delivery. Telling me you’re quirky automatically makes you less quirky. Also Swiss names are hard so at first it was hard to keep track of the characters (though I did catch on eventually).
There was a really annoying formatting thing too which was the most annoying part of all: the actual mystery part is being told to one of the characters by another character and to remind us of that, there are quotations around EVERYTHING. It just gets really annoying and confusing, especially when stories are told within a story and the quotations get really annoying and confusing.
Overall though it did subvert my expectations, which is what it set out to do, so I commend it for that.

فریدریش دورنمات و مسئله ی بغرنجِ رُمانِ جنایی
خب، من هنوز یکم توی شوک از این کتاب به سر می برم، بنابرین پراکندگی حرف هام رو می بخشید. تقریبا از نوجوانی بود که شیفته ی این ژانر شدم. علاقه ای رو که دوستان هم سن و سالم نسبت به رمان های فانتری یا عاشقانه داشتن، من صرفِ پرونده های شرلوک هلمز یا برخی از رمان های آگاتا کریستی میکردم. با وجود تموم کلیشه ها و از مُد افتادن این کتاب ها، من باهاشون خاطرات زیادی داشتم (شاید اسمش رو نوستالژی بذارین) ولی طولی نکشید که فهمیدم میشه از ژانر جنایی چیز دیگه ای هم توقع داشت. چیزی فراتر از حل کردن مسئله ی کار چه کسی بود؟ یا جواب دادن به سوالات چه کسی؟ چرا؟ چه وقت؟ یا هر چیز دیگه ای که عادت کردیم بین جمله های یه رُمان جنایی دنبالش بگردیم. چند سالی هست که توی جهان ادبیات دنبال نمونه های متفاوت
میگردم. رُمان های جنایی که بی پروایانه سنت های ژانر خودشون رو درهم بکشنن و البته از روی آگاهی کامل اینکارو انجام بدن. از نمونه های معروف تر گرفته مثل ریموند چندلرِ و بازیش با دنیای نوآر، جان گریشام و دغدغه های حقوقیش، جان لوکاره و جاسوس های دوجانبه اش تا کتاب های آوانگارد تر و کمتر شناخته شده مثل فروشنده ی دوره گردِ پیتر هاندکه که نمیشه به راحتی توی سبک مشخصی قرارش داد. شاید مهمترین ویژگی رُمان قول یا به قول طنز تلخِ دورنمات "فاتحه ی رُمان جنایی"، این باشه که نویسنده با رعایت نسبتا کامل قواعد شکل گیری یک داستان بر اساس جنایت، یکی از سنت شکن ترین رمان های کارآگاهی رو نوشته که نثری به شدت جذاب و در عین حال روان داره و شخصیت پردازی منحصر به فردش تا مدت ها توی ذهن آدم میمونه. این رُمان به نسبت خودش کوتاهه و من با اینکه دلم میخواست مدت ها به خوندنش ادامه بدم، الان حس میکنم که اتفاقا چقدر خوب و درست از توصیفات بی جا و بی مورد اجتناب کرده به طوری که کُل روایت مثل یک نقل قول کمی طولانی به نظر میرسه که گاهی هم جاهای خالی داره تا مخاطب با استفاده از قوه ی تخیل خودش به تصاویر شکل کامل تری بده، چون به قول معروف دو تا آدم همیشه یک داستان رو به دو شکل متفاوت می شنون. من نسخه ی ترجمه شده رو مطالعه کردم که آقای عزت الله فولادوند ترجمه کردن و کارشون واقعا بی نقص بود. متاسفانه این نسخه رو نتونستم توی گودریدز پیدا کنم. انتشارات هم فرهنگ جاوید هست. در آخر اینکه، به قول مترجم:
هرکسی که با سیر تحولی رمان و اندیشه در ادبیات غرب آشنا باشد، به آسانی در می یابد که دورنمات در این کتاب مقوله ی داستانسرایی محض را فرسنگ ها پشت سر گذاشته و وارد قلمرو هنر شده است و در همین چند صفحه یکی از برجسته ترین نمونه های رمان اندیشه یا رمان فلسفی را پدید آورده است.
پ.ن: درمورد فلسفه ی مورد بحث توی کتاب بیشتر صحبت نمیکنم تا خودتون باهاش مواجه بشین ولی جنس دغدغه اش به فیلم "یک مرد جدی" از برادران کوهن شباهت هایی داره. خلاصه که این کتاب رو همه جوره پیشنهاد میکنم، امیدوارم اگر خوندین مثل من ازش لذت زیادی ببرین.

I really don't rememebr if i read the book before or after seeing the film, but I am sure the advent of the film inspired me to seek it out from the library for sure! I really enjoyed the book immensely, not just as a crime novel, but also one about people and how they affected by their work and obsession for justice and a solution.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt is very highly regarded in Switzerland and has even had a vast underground museum constructed in his honour, designed by a bombastic, constipated famous architect, below the house in which Dürrenmatt used to live; an enormous cavern that surely has Dürrenmatt turning in his grave.
There's a great warmth to Dürrenmatt's writing, and a love of everyday Swiss life, but as a piece of crime fiction, this book really doesn't cut the mustard. Think:
Steaming plates of Swiss comfort food served in well-appointed restaurants decorated with the finest works of contemporary art; many bottles of good wine; selections of cigars; charming villages, little roads, forest glades, country people toiling in the fields, a flight to Syria aborted at the very last minute, delightful Swiss landscapes, a little girl with a red skirt (murdered for no credible reason) and a rather tall tale about a police investigator.
This little book gives us a delightful picture of Swiss country life. It's supposed to be a detective novel but ultimately, the detective fails to find the murderer of the little girl, even though he dedicates his whole life to the search and even completely changes his identity for the purpose.
As you read you're preached at for expecting the usual kind of detective novel: the kind where the murderer is finally uncovered, right at the end. And so he is. But it's all very contrived and anticlimactic.
