This one also did not emotionally devastate me? Am I a bad person? Anyway,
Spoilerlingered on goddamn Atlan for like too long again considering he is literally dead but still causing issues, and I kinda… Didn't love soul-bonding with Kitay because I'm still p much ambivalent to him but I do love a good male/female platonic bond so eh. A lot of the foreshadowing was v obvious but I kind of feel like it was supposed to be? Like even the characters knew they were gonna be betrayed they were just too depressed to do anything about it and honestly relatable. I hope we get to see Venka more in the next book; after Qara just dropped some plot device and then died, we're in desperate need of some other female characters. This sounds like I didn't like it but I really did; you know it's well-paced when it's that big and you don't get bored

A really successful second novel. Totally consuming. Looking back at it, I realize book 2 has quite a lot of plot points but there’s enough space within the story to let the characters breath- it’s well balanced.  I really enjoyed watching Rin learn to control her power and reconnect with old schoolmates . There’s some joy mixed in with the heartache but this is still a war novel and I was very tense each battle hoping my favourite characters wouldn’t die. The ending was compelling too, I’ve already got my paws on book 3!

I thought this book moved much faster than the first one. Rin is really unbearable. She is completely unable to process emotion, and she really has no remorse for any of the shit she has done which includes genocide and  bad leadership leading to the Cike injuries and death but at the same time she’s so torn up about Altan dying. She blames herself for his death which feels like it doesn’t really fit her character. She would commit mass genocide on the Mugen again, but she also feels bad about it?! I do think it’s interesting how you can root for Rin at times while also hating her. I often wonder why the Cike stay with her, but I guess that’s similar to followers of Mao. Basically, everyone sucks, but you also kind of want them to turn it around. I guess I’ll read the 3rd to see if it happens. If you never learned about Chinese history, this might be an interesting foray for you.

rf kuang did it AGAIN with this book im in shock….
such a great sequel to the poppy war, it was so well paced & i was enthralled with the story constantly. the last hundred pages or so RIPPED MY HEART OUT i still cant believe it……
kuang manages to perfectly & convincingly detail a story from such a limited third person perspective; its so hard to look at all angles of this story when its all told from rin’s pov. never been a huge fan of war topics in my reading selections but this one & its predecessor were absolutely astonishing. 5/5 stars Again from such a talented author

(my copy had 654 pages)

I'm not sure I always liked Rin, but I liked the Cike and Kitay and I think though it was brutal that it was brutally honest. About war, discrimination, crimes and colonialism. It's not beautified in any way and I think that's the only right way to tell this story.
