After finishing finishing this book, I feel like I am reeling, like the stories of these three generations of women, (connected by geography and history) will not soon leave me. I know that I will be pondering the interconnectedness, the fierce, unrelenting exposé of America's pretend-righteousness, and the quiet portrayal of violence against women. The prose here is so sharp, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy in language, use of dialogue, and in some respects gutteral violence. This book also reminded me of a Faulknerian tale, a truly American novel at the heart of which is is a violence that fuels us even now. A sincerely powerful, thought provoking, and terribly stark novel.
