Couldn't finish it because 1) short and choppy sentences, 2) graphic animal cruelty and animal death.

This one is not for everyone, particularly because of the writing style and/or the subject matter. There were some difficult, graphic bits to get through. And once you reach the end, it’s realization after tough realization, a series of gut-punch reveals that will definitely stay with me. It’s worth the attempt, in my opinion, if you can stick with it past the halfway mark. But I understand why this may not land with everyone.
Spoiler warning: I have to mention this has DID representation. I can’t speak on whether it was done accurately, but I do think it was done well in terms of how it’s weaved into this story, and judging by the afterword, it seems the author took time to research and speak with real people about this experience, which is worth something, I think.

One of those books I wish I could forget and read again. I love the unreliable narrators and the twists and turns so much.

I know this book is considered horror, but I think it’s more accurate to call it psychological. Reminds me of how I felt watching Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho. Ted is a character for whom I’ll have infinite compassion. Dee, less so, but she too could benefit from kindness and therapy. I feel so deeply and heavily sorry for Ted. This may be the best fictional work I’ve read on DID. It’s a rare disorder but one that those who suffer from it could be greatly helped if we had more books about it, both fictional and scientific.
