this was not my vibe at all unfortunately. I had to force myself to listen to the audiobook to finish this due to my idiotic ass spending $32 on it.
what I liked
- the conversations around sex and consent
- conversations around race
what I disliked
- the writing
- the narrative voices– Janelle sounded like a child and there was no clear distinction between her and Morris
- the plot– now I do not need a racy and high action plot to be entertained but God this was boring
- lgbt rep was not written the best imo
- their actual love of reading and music was never properly discussed
- the utter disregard of side characters

I really enjoyed my reading experience with this book and the audio narration. I'm a big lover of books and music, so the fact that this was a sci-fi that combined the love of both really was perfect for me. I loved the alien story line as well as the "near future" feel that this author built in the world.

soft dnf from me. I was really interested in the premise and connection to Song of Salvation which I read this year, but couldn't get into the story. I realized that I liked the "idea" of the book but not enough to justify the time it would take to read it. I am happy reading a plot summary.

You know when you read a book so good that you can feel it making you excited about life again? This was one of those books for me. The twists? Impeccable. The romance? Beautiful. It was so sweet and I don't think I've loved a book this much in a very long time.

When I was reading the first few chapters of this book, I thought I would like it a lot. The setup and worldbuilding were compeling.
However, by the end, I felt it was too tropey, too focused on romance, and relied too much on deus ex machina

This was so beautiful and full of hope. For an alien invasion story it wasn't dark and gritty, which I appreciated. There were some awful things happening, but it was clearly a creative way to talk about how awful human beings are without the need of invading aliens. The social commentary, something I tend not to enjoy, was great and I was nodding along to all the awfulness of humanity.
Speaking of the aliens, they really weren't your typical aliens. They were very human which I think made them all the more deplorable. I liked the idea behind why they are invading and the plot to take them down was also super cool. Everything about the sci-fi stuff seemed really believable.
Morris and Ellie were adorable. I loved their friendship and their super cute and respectful romance. The demisexual rep was awesome and there definitely needs to be more demisexual characters in books.
I think the best thing about this book was the way the characters talked about music and books. It was so precious to them and they spoke about it like they were the only things worth saving. It was beautiful and reignited my love for music and stories. The way music was woven into this story was genius!
My main drawback with this is that it's left so unfinished. There was no defeat of the big bad, it was only the beginning of the bigger story. I desperately want a second book!
