I was loving this audiobook until I looked down and saw there were only 30 minutes left. It became immediately clear that there were going to be many things unresolved. I was so surprised that I actually went t back to the table of contents, sure I’d accidentally skipped large section.
Why was Diego so sure David wasn’t a good guy?
Why did Luz see Simodecea’s point of view of her husbands death during David’s tea leaf reading?
What was the point of seeing Papa Tikas pay off his brother’s side piece?
And I was disappointed with how rushed Diego‘s return was. He just comes back, goes to an orphanage, gets his baby and then the book is over?

I feel really torn, because the writing, particularly about Simodecea, was hauntingly beautiful.
Fajardo-Anstine’s writing is lyrical and beautifully descriptive. (Her explanation of what it’s like to lose a person who is not dead, rang very true for me.) She managed non-linear timelines very well. Like I said, it was only the abrupt ending and lack of closed storylines that I had a problem with.
I’ll have to check out Sabrina and Corina.

I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either.

The story moved very slow in the beginning and picked up towards the end. I found the ending to be anti-climactic. Just okay.

My favorite genre/trope at the moment is the multi generation perspective family story. Just love it. I really enjoyed this. I loved the setting and the characters. It really brought to life a time/place/experience I had never explored before. Honestly I wanted more. I feel like the story arc could have gone further but overall still really enjoyed
