Short and sweet. The poems border on prose at times, and whilst simple in style they bear a complex of themes: mortality, writing, nature, anthropomorphism and the fleetingness of romantic love. I found The Last Words of My English Grandmother especially touching. Bears repeated reading, I am sure.

very sweet, these, the poem, raindrops on a briar and seafarer were my favourites.

My advice for this book - read each poem twice. It definitely helped me to better understand what the author was portraying and enjoy the book more.

Modern poetry isn’t usually my thing and I preferred the poems that followed more of a narrative rather than the short poems that expand on small details. It made me think that perhaps my initial distaste to modern poetry links to how we fail to relish in the simple things in life.

Discovered William Carlos Williams through Paterson - which I’m eternally thankful for. He’s also possibly the reason why I love to eat plums so much:
‘I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold’
OR
‘munching a plum on
the street a paper bag
of them in her hand
They taste good to her
They taste good
to her. They taste
good to her
You can see it by
the way she gives herself
to the one half
sucked out in her hand
Comforted
a solace of ripe plums
seeming to fill the air
They taste good to her’
How is one able to achieve such vividness with so little words? I’m fucking baffled & forever adhering to the identity of a crazy plum lady.
