I liked this.
That being said, as a hardcore monogamist... I feel a harem brewing - which I hate because I do not know who is going to be endgame which means I can’t “invest” in any of the relationships. That being said if I had to pick one of the current swinging ducks it’s eledan because his dark twisted hurt soul speaks to mine. If not him, then the violet eyed elf.

One Pippa DaCosta is not enough for this world. We need more from this specimen of a writer.

This'll be quick.

Did I love this story? Yes, up until the rapid-fire revelations at the very end bc wtf lol that came out of nowhere, and i dont think in a good way. It didn't make sense honestly. No foreshadowing or indications of this happening in the entire book.
I was so engrossed in this story tho. Sci-fi, fae, space drama, and the start of a reverse harem? Sounds too good to be true.

Was I confused? For many reasons, one mentioned above.
The romance? Can we even call it that? I felt more between Eladan and Kesh than between Talen, Kellee, and Kesh. Idt that was the intention. The start of chemistry was there, but I didn't feel like there was a momentum for romance or scenes that were indicating that she was close to our 2 MMCs (even tho Talen was barely there.. 3 major scenes maybe?). Like a kiss happened and a "I couldn't bear anything happening to you," and i was like, really? Why? You guys have barely talked at all and now you're worried like a lovesick fool?
Also, the worldbuilding wasn't there. Like, what happened to Earth? Not much backstory for any of the characters, either.

I'm assuming this is the slowest of slow burns for the RH romance, worldbuilding, and character development. Would've liked a little more in this first installment, but I'm still gonna continue on with this series.

Happy reading, Goodreads fiends.

I have a suspicion that big chunks of the plot didn't make complete sense if you think about them too closely, but I enjoyed the read enough that I don't really care tbh.

The double and triple crossing, that I've known from this author's other books is also here, and I'm really really hoping it doesn't needlessly become even more convoluted than this.

"Oh! What A Tangled Web We Weave When First We Practice To Deceive"

Pippa DaCosta has woven together sci-fi and fantasy to build the richly complex world in which Kesh, Kellee and Talon reside. As the story builds we gradually learn more and more about Kesh, Kelly, the fae and tek. I preferred this to an 'information dump' as it added to the twisty plot, suspense and sense of unease.

The book is written first person and entirely from Kesh's point of view. Kesh is just a simple messenger, caught up in someone else's battle, or is she? Oh my word, this is an onion of a book, made of layer upon layer of amazing story, action, adventure and mind-blowing plot twists. The blurb really doesn't do the book justice BUT that's to ensure the element of surprise. And there are surprises galore in this book.

It's one of those stories that is impossible to properly review without giving away spoilers, and I really want to avoid them so that you get the full impact of the book, like I did. If you have read other books by this author then you will know some of what to expect, but this far surpasses any of her work to date. It takes all the best elements of her previous stories, polishes them up, adds extra glitter to them and twists them into something else altogether. If you haven't read her books (a) why not? you're missing some amazing stories and (b) this is really well written, drags you into the story and doesn't let you go, leaves your head reeling in the best of ways and will have you begging and howling for Book 2 so that you can continue the story.

A standing ovation to the author for this awe-inspiring, mind-twisting, a-m-a-z-i-n-g read. I need to go and lie in a darkened corner to mull over this book and recover from the book hangover I now have.

This series is just not for me. Everyone in this book, with the possible exception of Talen, is a complete asshole. Asshole isn't even a big enough word for it. Asschasm. Asscanyon. Asscrater.

All of them.

I hate Eledan, and his insane bullshit.

I hate Kellee and his nonsensical judgment - given that his people also once killed for the fae (until they rebelled), he should fucking understand. That he just abandoned her to her imprisonment... I hate him.

And I hate Kesh, or whoever she is. The end twist was just too much for me. I can't read a series of nutbar characters in love with their abusers. And Kellee using her, threatening her. Ugh. Just no. Fuck all of this. It makes me want to light my kindle on fire.

3.5 WTF DID I JUST READ stars

Oooooooookay then

I can honestly, 100% say that I have never read anything like this before

Shoot the Messenger takes place in the future (kind of), with a fantasy aspect (kind of). It actually felt like if The Cruel Prince and Star Trek had a baby, it would be this book.

I never realized how many plot twists could happen in 285 pages. I started to feel whipped around by what all was happening, and I had to go back and reread some portions in order to understand what was going on. The plot twists did make sense to the story, and for the most part I didn't feel like they were put in there just to have something there. However, I could have done with one or two less OMG WHAT IS HAPPENING moments...my poor little heart can't take all that stress.

The romance wasn't entirely there either, and the parts that were there were confusing. I wasn't sure what was happening with Kesh and her boys, or if anything was supposed to be happening with them. There were a lot of hot feelings for several characters, and I wasn't certain who I should have been shipping, if anyone.

So yeah....I have confusing feelings for this book, but I'm still going to be reading the next book in the series because I hate cliff-hangers (which this one has), and my insatiable need to know what happens next needs to be, well, satiated.

Good world building and a solid plot combined with an unreliable narrator who seems as confused by herself as we are. And a hot cop. Loved it.

I absolutely love the inventiveness of Pippa DaCosta's mind and was wondering how she would interpret a blend of sci fi and fantasy. I've been looking forward to this series since I heard about its release. I got everything I wanted and more! Not only was the world building and concept of these particular fae fascination and fresh in terms of the lore, the story and characters were phenomenal. The plot and events in this book were fast paced and unpredictable. There were many gut-wrenching twists that pulled on your heartstrings, especially after you became so attached to the characters. Kesh is instantly likeable and easy to relate to, especially once her harrowing backstory is revealed. Talen and Kellee are each loveable in their own ways, and I really want to see the reverse harem aspect expanded in the future books. I truly enjoyed this story and would definitely recommend it to someone who has enjoyed urban fantasy in the past and is looking to add a little more sci fi to their library, or if a reader is simply looking to check out something new and exciting. You won't be disappointed!

Meh.

Okay, so, Shoot the Messenger started off pretty good. Then it took me on a roller coaster of emotions. Not the good kind either. No I went from bored to oh, this is exciting to back to being bored. I'm not going to lie, it did have some interesting concepts but I feel like I just motivating myself to finish it.

Kesh was an okay character but not my favorite. I also didn't see how this was a reverse harem kind of book either. Other than that, there's Kellee and Talen who I kind of felt bad for in the end. Especially with Talen. I don't really want to go into so much detail because I feel like I will spoil a crap ton of this book -but some things just made me disappointed in a certain character.

There's some betrayal and backstabbing. There's also some unexpected stuff happening in this book - but in the end, I was just bored. I wanted the book over with and I have no idea if I will dive into the next one.
