I've had this book for a year now and for some reason kept putting it off. Which was my loss because this is one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's just fast-paced and interesting and compelling and the characters and their motivations are so well done. It is a book about war, and one that looks at colonization and violence from caste system. If you're not in the mood for a lot of fight scenes, it's not for you. But if you're good with that it's fabulous.

If you liked R.F. Kuang's Poppy War series, you'll probably love this.

Re-reading this series with my sister and wow, still such an amazing debut novel for Evan Winter. An expansive and diverse fantasy that does not sacrifice detail for pace. I am so excited to read the third book once it comes out this March and look forward to continuing this series!

It's action-packed fantasy in a new, fresh setting inspired by African mythology. Sadly, the main character is unlikeable, behaves like an idiot, and doesn't learn throughout the book. His "I'm gonna train day and night and become the very best" ethos is not only unrealistic, it's not actually the best way to become stronger. Rest days are a thing!

The side characters are occasionally interesting, but since we're trapped in the mindset of the protagonist, the shittiest teenager in the multiverse, they don't save the book.

All in all, technically proficient but emotionally offputting. Also, dragons are not in the book enough to justify naming the book after them

I had so much fun reading this! It's a fast-paced, emotion filled read, and the worldbuilding is stellar. The magic system here is really unique and exciting, both in terms of the wow factor, and in the way it interacts with the politics and social hierarchies of the world.

What bumps it down to a 4, verging on 3.5 for me is the prose which could definitely be improved, and the sheer volume of fight scenes. While they're very well executed, and many of them manage to be memorable in their own right, it does feel like the book drags on for a little longer than necessary, mostly due to the huge page count spent on fights.

This book starts off really rough, but it does get way better. Just bare with it through the first 3 chapters.
This is a revenge story, and don't expect it to be anything but that. Personally, I was a little disappointed that other elements of the world weren't explored more. This book hints at a lot of interesting possible stories and then just sticks with Tau and his single track.
Tau is my other issue with this story. I think he's well written, and he's not intrinsically unlikable, but all of the characters around him are just so much more interesting than he is. I want to here Zuri's training or Kellen's struggles. Tau's just okay.
