The tone of this book is slow, dark, and heavy, so initially I found it hard to get into. This is a book about grief, loss, and isolation, and the author did a great job of conveying those feelings. She also accurately portrays the messiness of Marin’s life following her traumatic experiences, but because of that, the book gets confusing at parts and at other times nothing happens. Overall, the characters and their feelings are well written, but sometimes the story gets lost.

this book hit so close to home, as someone who also lost a grandparent they were close to, though to different circumstances.
i know the love marin has for her gramps, how deeply it goes & the crater that was left when he was gone & reading this book i felt all those emotions again.
a beautifully written book, there's so many lines that are going to stick with me forever.
i wish that each time i re-read this book, whenever i'm ready for it, that it's like i'm reading it for the first time.

Marin's mother is said to die via drowning in the ocean, but no details are given A little more detail is given when talking about whenSpoiler
gramps is said to kill himself the same way. it talks about how the tides drag people deep under. marin thinks about what he must've felt/looked like. a body is never foundmaartabarrales's review against another edition
