Like a great chase movie, but with Jedi and some pretty cool peripheral characters (I-5, Lorn). Note to George Lucas: Film this book. Or make a cartoon. I want more Darth Maul.

Great story overall, but the gymnastics at the end to tie this book up with The Phantom Menace was a mess

It took a bit to get going but once it did it was amazing. I really like Darth Maul and I was happy to learn he had survived his battle with the jedi in Episode 1

Dath Maul goes on a mission. One of the best characters from the prequels deserves more stories, alongside Boba Fett as having little screen time but left a lasting impression. This book also has an additional short story at the end

The end wasn't my favorite but I really enjoyed this story. It's constantly moving, interesting, sometimes funny. But overall sad. It's one of my favorite kinds of star wars books, it fits in without trying to be something bigger than the movies, it can have just a normal plot.

Let me preface this by stating that the best way to truly experience this book is through the audiobook narrated by Sam Witwer. He totally brought the characters to life in an incredibly compelling way.
This was an excellent book. I was very pleased with the pacing of this book. I really didn’t expect to fall in love with the original characters, but by the end of the book, I was so invested in their well-beings.
The action is incredible. The character work is fantastic; Lorn Pavan quickly became a favorite of mine. I so appreciated the care the author took to cleanly align this “prequel” with the official storyline. Well done.

Witwer's narration gives it an extra bump to five stars. Really, the man should read every book. ANd it's a great lead in to Ep 1 to boot!

I should say that I usually do not read a lot of Star Wars novels that take place close to the events in the movies. It is because I feel I know how things will end down the road, so how the characters got there does not really interest me. There are some exceptions, and if they are stories of very different characters (not the usual cast), I may pick them up out of curiosity (for example, the MedStar duology, which I have on my bookshelf here). Anyhow, I picked this one up at my local public library, again, out of curiosity. We'll see how it turns out once I get to it.

Overall, not the greatest Star Wars novel, but it was ok. If nothing else, it was a quick read. It does set up into the events of Star Wars:Episode One. So, those who have seen the movie know Darth Maul's eventual fate, but the novel adds some depth to the character that is not found in the film, so in that regard, it makes for good reading. The pace is pretty good. The ending was ok; then again, given how events eventually turn out, it sort of has to end the way it does, but it does add a bit of a small twist to keep it interesting. Essentially, it is a book to borrow and read. I borrowed it from my local public library. Fans will definitely appreciate it. Casual readers may find it just ok.
