I need some time to process this, but damn was this good. I think that the pacing was way better in this than in the poppy war which was my biggest critique about the first book. The stakes were so high and Rin is the epitome of a morally grey character and turns the trope of the chosen one on its head by making her almost an anti hero. This is quickly becoming a favorite series and the fact that Rebecca’s debut was the Poppy War makes it even more of a masterpiece.

CW: rape, themes of war, gaslighting, talk of suicide, genital mutilation, drug use and substance abuse, loss of a loved one, death. This book gets dark.

I hate the "mc loses their power" trope. HATE IT. Also Rin was absolutely insufferable multiple times throughout the book. I did still enjoy reading through it, but that might just be because I get attached to characters way too easily.

The adventure continues!

The world gets richer, the stakes are higher, the losses hurt more.

There's no dip in quality or discontinuity going from the first book to the second. Everything flows as if it's one big book.

I received a copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

look i wanted to love this as much as i did the first one, but it just kept going on and on and on (g i felt like i was reading a political manuscript or something, hence the deduction of 1 star.
the .5 was deducted for lack of action until the last third of the book.
but to be fair some parts were so freaking good like when they went with changhan and qara, and those few pages of them drunk and happy.
my favorite quote was:
"Rin was so tired of having to prove her humanity."
