Was expecting further adventures of the Wayfarer crew, and was at first sort of bummed to be reading a mostly unrelated story featuring a minor character from the first book and a character that was literally born in the last few pages of that book, but got over that pretty quickly. You can't really call this a sequel, as it shares almost nothing with the first book other than being set in the same universe and sharing the original's fascination with characters who have non-human psychologies while still being fully realized persons.

While not quite as interesting as the first book in he series, this is still a great slice of life style sci-fi. The world gets even more detail and feels more loved in than the first, though I do miss on the diversity of cast. The epilogue felt a little rushed, and wouldn't have suffered from an additional chapter or two immediately before it.

I loved “The Long Way…” so much that I was nervous to read this one and put it off for a whole year.

That was my mistake.

This book is stunning. It’s a slow and steady revelation that questions what is family, what is purpose, and what it means to be alive.

I have no words. If I could give six stars, I would.

A engrossing and thought provoking sequel to the first in the series which I like as much as if not more than the original. Though it could be a standalone novel, I love that we get to deeply know and flush out the histories and psyches of some characters we didn't get to see as much of in the first book. I don't even know who is my favorite POV in this book, each of the characters are all incredible and fascinating. No spoilers, but this book is essentially a thought experiment done very, very well, and still very engaging despite a less action-packed plot.
