Two quotes from Ernest Everett Just will stick with me: "Environment and organism are one. Neither can be separated from the other." And, spoken when Just returned to America from Europe and the Statue of Liberty came into sight: "This is where my liberty ends." Born in South Carolina, Just eventually moved to Europe permanently due to the racism he constantly encountered in America. He was a pioneer in biology, a professor, and a survivor of sicknesses and natural disasters that killed nearly his entire family. I am grateful to have learned of this incredible man's legacy. The artwork in this book is amazing, and I love how the author included a timeline of Just's life at the back of the book - listing events that Just experienced in black type, and listing events that impacted his life in red type.

4.5 stars. It's difficult to express how wonderful and beautiful this book is. At times the writing feels a bit awkward, but the story and the artwork make this a book I want to buy for every kid I know.

This was such an interesting story about Ernest Everett Just. I knew nothing about him and found out how fascinating his life and research was. Great Author Note and Timeline at the end of the book give even more information on him and his legacy.

An interesting story, but I can’t say the writing did it completely justice. I think covering a bit more how his research changed the scientific community at the time would have been best, even if more lengthy. The illustrations are beautiful, especially the one where Ernest opens up the wonders of the sea world.
