I absolutely LOVED this book. I loved Poppy, her brothers and her parents and I love that they seemed so real to me. The story was heartfelt and told just beautifully. It was a book that I stayed up late to finish and woke up early to start reading again. This was the second book by Laurie Frankel that I read this month and I'll surely keep going back for more of hers.

This only thing that prevents me from rating this 5 stars is the (annoyingly) heavy emphasis placed upon keeping Poppy’s identity a secret—I didn’t, and continue to not, understand why not telling everyone that she’s trans is an issue. But seeing as this is written by the mother of a trans kid, I guess I can understand why it focused so much on the effects of “hiding” her identity. I just don’t personally see how it could be a problem.

This book put me through a lot of emotions. That's really all I have to say. It was so good and really well told.

I adored this novel. I loved every character and felt a deep attachment to the family. I truly felt the parents' love and concern for their child and appreciated that the book tackled the intricacies of navigating parenting a nonbinary child, even whilst being fully supportive of the child. It forced me to consider different perspectives- all while still showing unconditional love and support for the child's wishes. It felt like a parenting book rolled into a deeply touching novel.
