This wasn’t what I was expecting. It was enjoyable but not as dark or thrilling as I thought it was going to be. I didn’t really like how it was told because I felt like you couldn’t connect to the characters and their storylines as much. Also until the end we didn’t get to really see how bad the cult was. Also a certain part in this just doesn’t make sense it’s a spoiler so don’t read this but I don’t understand why she would just join it after fighting them for so long. Overall it was enjoyable but nothing amazing like Sadie was.

PLEASE read content warnings before going into this one: it's rough. For whatever reason though, it really worked for me. I don't mind slow pace if I'm getting tiny new bits of information and intrigue as I go so what others don't like about this book really worked for me. I thought the author did a stellar job creating a realistic cult and no one writes better complex sister relationships than Courtney Summers. She really did that again.

I liked this book a lot. It was dark and twisted and so well written that at one point I was truly starting to understand the pull of The Project. I’ve never felt that strong of a connection to what a character was also feeling or truly understanding the emotions that would bring someone to a cult. The jumps in narrator/time could be a little jarring but ultimately the way everything unfolded was logical.

This was a strange little book, but not in a bad way! The story kind of meanders along, not quite directionless but not quite as driven as its protagonist is. I love a good split timeline and this book utilizes the device well, and the characters were well fleshed out. What it lacks in thrill it certainly makes up for in mystery and a compelling, touching story about family, love, connection, and devotion.
