The enjoyability level is high but the characters don't feel all there, they feel a bit like cheap knockoffs and the world-building is non-existent but looking at it as more a thriller then a fantasy, yeah I had a good time with it.
It's literally a thriller with magic set in a royal palace, there is such a lack of fantasy elements beyond that.

So much wasted potential. On paper, this story has everything I’d want, it just doesn’t connect with me.
This was way too long.
I hate it when the middle of a book is dragged out and then in the last 20 pages we get a big twist and finally some high-stakes action, only to have the book end in the middle of that.

I also felt uncomfortable reading some of the comparisons and the main character’s thoughts about Englass and its people. Yeah, we get it, colonialism is bad, no need to make fun of red haired people or look down on their wedding ceremonies and such just because they’re different.
The villains were all super one-dimensional.
