This was very weird. Not in a good way, most of the time. It was just confusing and disjointed to me. I didn’t DNF because I was holding out for a great plot twist that would make it all worth it. There was definitely a twist, but I didn’t care for it and I still don’t really understand what happened.

It was such a relief to be done with this one. I  enjoyed the first half, even if I thought it was a little painful to read that
Wilder got so thoroughly played by Sky
.

Then I felt like it kind of went off the deep end a bit with the time jump and Wilder went from being “mildly annoying teenage nerd but that’s understandable” to “deeply annoying middle-aged nerd still talking like a teenage boy, what is wrong with you?!?”

At 65-ish % I started asking myself if I should just DNF this one. The plot had lost its charm for me and Wilder was too annoying for me to want to continue on for his sake. I continued to debate this with myself until about 85-90% with the
big Pearl story reveal
. At that point I decided to stick with it to the end since it felt a little more understandable that I hated
adult Wilder, as a weird approximation by a grieving Pearl and not a “real” person
.

I listened to this on audio while doing other things which is the only reason I’m not tearing my hair out for spending 13 hours on it 😂 This book just felt like it kept going and going and going with no end in sight. (Which makes more sense when
you get to the end and it IS multiple books/stories
, but it was not a pleasant process to get there.)

Other, parting note thoughts:
• I would be fine with never hearing hair described as russet ever again
• The primary narrator (Christopher Ragland) was great, especially the affects he put on for female characters and his different accents.
• It took me out of the story a bit that Wilder called flashlights “torches”. He also kept referring to seaweed as just “weed” which is something I haven’t heard before. Idk if this is a British-ism like torch or if he’s just weird.
• 2023 Wilder thinking about all the ways he could commit suicide and thinking “Gee, hanging wouldn’t work because I don’t know how to tie one of those noose doodads!” was possibly the most enraging part of the whole book and I cannot fully articulate why. You’re old enough to be contemplating every possible way to check out early, and you don’t know that it’s called a noose? And you try to cutesy it up with “doodad”? 😭

Very torn on how I feel about this book.  Some parts (everything from Wilder's memoir) was great.  Everything else was very meh and confusing though.

Maybe I read the last 5 chapters or so too fast, but it just kept getting more and more convoluted and I felt like it didn't need all that.  Made it difficult to figure out what I had read so far that was real vs a book within the story.

I felt very sad while reading.  It was heavy in spite of the chaotic ending.

I really liked this book, up until the ending. It felt unnecessary to me. A little disappointed because I love her other books.

Holy FUCK this was crazy. Ward’s writing is as beautiful as ever. There is truly nothing I love more than a horror novel that prompts me to reread previous chapters constantly!
