The most interesting thing about Achilles as a character is Patroclus lmao

It reads like an epic - a fairy tale - in the best way.
I loved the main character and I loved falling in love with the hero through him.
There is so much heartache in watching the hero grow from boy to man and watching him lose his humanity to his pride, only to be reminded that he is startlingly, heartbreakingly human in his grief.
I was unprepared for the amount of mentioned sexual assault in this story, particularly as the men often treat it as a given and accepted normal reality. Definite trigger warning on that.
I cried my eyes out by the end and there are many beautiful and aching passages in the book. Worth a read.

This book taught me about how special it is to know someone for who they are and to love them with all that you have. The myth between the two of them is devastating but it genuinely taught me so much. I look at life differently now.

Loved it! I lost it on a plane and went out to buy another copy just so I could finish.

The beginning was good and set up a cute love story, but the middle was stale and hard to read. I also got caught up on the names, but it might be because I was listening via audiobook and not seeing the names in the physical book. The end was very sweet and made up for the middle.

It’s all Greek to me. Fantastic depiction of Patroclus and Achilles relationship. Not sure I fancy Thetis as my mother in law though!

Madeline Miller’s prose is so beautiful that it almost hurts, and her characters so real and tangible that I feel I’ve known them my entire life. The relationship between Achilles and Patroclus is so perfectly crafted and the characters so masterfully built that only Miller could make me shed tears for the Trojan War some 3,000 years after the fact. A book like this leaves me at a loss for words.
