This book has been on my radar and my shelf for a few years and this weekend just felt like the right time to finally read it. I wanted something a bit dark and spooky but also light and easy enough to breeze through and this one fit the bill perfectly! Technically this is a YA book and it does feel like it at times, but still pretty dang good for me to keep reading until the end.
First, the atmosphere in this book is well done; it’s creepy and weird and you meet some interesting characters and go through some interesting events that keep the feelings amped up until the very end. It all feels so mysterious and I was literally guessing about what was going on until the end. Second, I also enjoyed how the author writes about grief and living with those sometimes debilitating feelings combined with love and alienation. Overall, I loved the story and the way it was written in a very stream of consciousness style; you never get a chance to get outside of the narrator’s point of view which makes sense when you get the whole story in the end. Pacing wise, it was a bit disjointed. Things happen very fast and progress quickly but I appreciate that the author didn’t drag it out too much, the pace just keeps you going and makes you want to keep turning the pages. In total, this was a fun and spooky book to read, especially if summer is your favorite time to read those kinds of things.

*sigh* that ending though. After really enjoying the book, I feel so disappointed and confused right now.

Probably one of my favourite books I read this year! A super creepy and gripping story with a fantastic twist, written in a brilliant narrative voice. I loved it!
