A memoir about an older teen’s experience living in a psychiatric hospital for a couple years. Very vivid and insightful.

This is one of the most beautifully honest books I have ever read. I am a huge fan on Silvia Plath and The Bell Jar, so I was more than happy to pick this up to read. It’s a short book, taking me around four days to read, but it was packed to the brim with endearingly disturbing stories of mental illness, suicide, and the horrors that come with them. The existential nature of the book is terrifyingly cathartic, and I would truly recommend this book to anybody with a mental illness, who that are interested in mental health.

It's nice to know that I'm not alone with my mental illness but at the same time it's incredibly sad.

Love the movie and finally got around to reading the book that started it all. It’s a very quick read and easy to fall into. Susanna Kaysen’s writing voice is great and I really enjoyed this book even with its super dark underbelly.
Don’t expect to get a play-by-play of the movie because the book is at the base the same, but really different once the base has been laid.
Gotta go watch Girl, Interrupted now.

Crying score: No, but I think I could have if I weren’t reading at work in public.

I really enjoyed this after picking it up from a charity shop on a whim. I won’t lie, I struggled to read some of the teensy writing in the photocopied hospital notes, but I did find it really fascinating - if that’s even the right word. A lot of what Kaysen talks about, about why sane people fear ill people because everyone has the capacity for insanity, was so true. Very much enjoyed.
