Susanna Kaysen gives us stories from her time in the psychiatric hospital as a 18 y/o in 1967. It’s so honest and even darkly funny at times.

Wow I really liked this! In the beginning I was reminded of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest but towards the end, when she is released from the hospital, she reflects on her diagnosis and societal perceptions of what constitutes “crazy.” She raises some fine points!

The movie based off this book is my favorite, and this book puts all of that into a stark reality. I rated this book sort of low because it threw me into the realization that mental illness (my own included) is rarely poetic and aesthetic.
