The story is beautifully written. Everything about it lovely, but SPOILER:
At around 20% there were hints that an animal was going to die. I checked doesthedogdie.com and found out that yes, the dog does die. So regardless of the wonderful storytelling, I cannot read on.

Perhaps felt a little long and a few too many questions unanswered, but only the whole this book is spooky and atmospheric, with some really extraordinary character writing and exquisite detail.

I'm honestly not sure what I think of the story. The movie was pretty boring, so I thought I'd give the audiobook a try, largely because I always enjoy Simon Vance's unparalleled performance.
The book isn't quite as dull as the movie, but the character of the Doctor is so fundamentally unlikeable and judgemental that I don't trust him as the narrator. His objectives are questionable at best, malicious at worst -
but we never know either way
.
So I did enjoy the book, I suppose. But it's not one I'll ever read again.

I picked this up on a whim after my mom mentioned the slow pace, because I wanted a calm and quiet read. The setting is extremely well-researched and well-written, especially the fate of grand estates in post-war Britain, but I wasn't much interested in the plot or characters.

The pacing was too slow for me and I wasn't invested in the characters. The inviting incident happens 100 pages in and I got a little interested but then it slowed down again. I stopped at about 30%.
