I enjoyed this book from Tess Gerritsen. It was first published as 'Peggy Sue Got Murdered', but I don't know the year. It was her first book at a crime thriller. I had never read it, bought it at a library book sale, and decided to see what it was about. Not disappointed by it, but it's more romantic suspense to me.

Kat Novack is an assistant ME, that is putting her life back together from a divorce. A Jane Doe comes into the ME's office from an apparent drug overdose. Kat doesn't think anything of it, because drug overdoses, said to say, are common. But soon there are others, and the drug is new.

Adam is wealthy and a widower. His step-daughter is missing. He has been looking for her with no luck. Soon his and Kat's lives collide.

They go on the hunt for his step-daughter and the drug. The only question is can they survive it?

Bear ๐Ÿป content in this book was non-existent: an unfortunate 0/10 bears.ย

This was the most deliciously tropey book I've read in a long time. I enjoyed reading it absolutely despite myself.

  • A girl from the unnamed yet ominously capitalized Projects of ambiguous ethnic origins who Got Out and has Conflicting Feelings? โœ”๏ธ
  • A rich white widower who has a butler who says words like "quite" as a whole sentence? ๐Ÿ˜ญโœ”๏ธ

I read this as part of a Must Read Thrillers List. If you love a campy book with predictable cishet romance and mystery tropes, yeah, I totally recommend it. On the thriller front? You could totes skip it.ย
I'll leave with this delicious nugget:

"...by the time they open the building again, the ratsโ€™ll have taken care of things. If you catch my drift.โ€ Meaning our bodies, thought Kat with a rush of nausea.
