Great insight into life with a rare illness - particularly important to consider what is really valuable in life. Less materialistic, more experiences.
Would recommend that KS2 children delve into this book!

This book follows the story of a young boy, Joe Grant, who has been hospitalized his entire life with a rare genetic disorder. This genetic disorder confines him to a hospital room that is sealed and monitored for bacteria at all times and because of this Joe has lived a very solitary life.

This was a very good book (especially for any reader that enjoyed Wonder) because Joe is such a positive and yet realistic character. We experience his ups and downs and they feel realistic to that of an eleven year old in this situation.

The best part of this book is the way that Joe interacts with the people in his life and the friendships that he makes. His sister, the hospital staff, Amir (a new nurse), and Henry are all fantastic characters that add to the depth of this story and help tell this both heartwarming and (at times) heart wrenching story.

Absolutely beautiful. This book was touching, honest and brilliant, recommended for anyone who enjoyed Wonder by R.J. Palacio.

I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling, heartbreaking but somehow motivating, fascinating and honest book that made me laugh, cry and marvel.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to go along with a young boy's journey and see the world through the eyes of a young boy with dreams, goals and so much more.

What a tear jerker of an ending! what a lovely book about what it would be like to live in a bubble and how someone must feel not been able to go outside. Not only does Joe not have parents, his best friend is through Skype and he has a sister who can visit every now and again. If this book could be real life I wish that there were more people like Amir.

I went into this book expecting something like Shannon M. Drapers “Out of My Mind” or R. J. Palacios “Wonder”, but in the end, I was underwhelmed.

What I Liked
Characters: I really loved all of the characters. They were all so loveable and realistic. The only issue with the characters is that the dialog between Joe and Henry seamed to mature.
Plot: As for the plot I really liked the idea of it,. But it took a turn that I was not a fan of. I also really liked that it did not glamorize illness in any way. It showed how Joe’s life was not a walk in the park.

What I didn’t like
How easy Things Were: There were some things that happened (That I am not going to specify cause spoilers) that all I could think is “Ummmm… Yea know that would never happen” I would have liked this quite a bit more if it was more realistic.
Pacing: This book was slow in the beginning, then it ended to abruptly. If it had a more consistent pace (even if it was really slow) I would have been a lot happier.

In all I did enjoy this book. If in intrigues you then by all means pick it up, but I would not call it a must read.

I gave this book a 3.5/5 stars.
