this was a hell of a book! johnson is very clearly moving through his understanding of the world and society and people and— like he says in the book— what works for one person may not work at all for another. this book is well-written, dark, and interesting, but also reads like someone searching for simple answers, who is lost, and who is trying to navigate a confusing darkness without understanding of the full scope. this is definitely an aspect of life, but johnson writes like it's all of it, and that some universal truth has been discovered, but i don't really think so. also very clear that political inclinations got all tangled up here and that a lot of biases fed into the final product. all in all, an interesting read, and pretty well-written, but not quite as compelling or ground-breaking or intriguing as i'd hoped it would be. makes you think, but maybe not as hard or as deep or as fully as it thinks it does, or as you should. interesting!

As an avid horror and effed-up content fan, I found myself even chewing slow on this one, but a well written story IS a well written story. This story makes you feel a LOT of things, given the content of course, and isn’t for the feint of heart, but the build-up and play on your hopes throughout makes it an intriguing read.
