I picked up this book at Chapters one day on the bargain shelf for pretty cheap! I had seen this book on other blogs out there, and the cover really intrigued me. I happened to be some place waiting for someone and Need was the only book I had with me, so I started it and since that first page, I couldn't put it down. I was hooked, and because of that, I read it pretty quick!
The book, Need is about Zara, a young girl who moves away from her mom, her home, and her friends. She moves to a small town where she realizes she has been followed by a strange man. Zara meets new friends, including Nick, Izzie and Devyn, and she feels like things are going to be okay - other than the strange man with gold dust who is following her around. Suddenly her life is turned upside down though when she realizes that her Gram (who she moved in with) her friends, and even her family are not who or what she originally thought. They know secrets and worlds that Zara never knew existed.
The characters in Need are fun and well written. Zara is a stubborn, driven, independent young girl. Izzie is a fun energetic girl who cares so much about her friendships. We meet Nick Colt and he's a handsome, mysterious guy and I found myself wanting to read more and more about him. To get to know him more I guess! There are other note-worthy characters too, Ian, Megan and Devyn. And they are all imperative characters to this novel too.
Carrie Jones' writing is excellent - she knows how to keep the reader guessing and interested throughout the whole book. The part I liked the most about Need, was the obsession with Phobias. I found it so interesting that there are so many phobias out there, and that Zara collects them.
Overall, Need by Carrie Jones was a good novel, and I've already gone out and got the second to the series, Entice. I'm looking forward to reading it, and continuing the story (and getting to know Nick some more!)

And the covers of the novels are gorgeous, and that's a huge bonus!

Need is Fantastic!! Carrie Jones creates a big adventure for Zara in the tiny town of Bedford, Maine. Also, Nick sounds totally HOT!! I loved it. The plot has many twists and is an excellent mystery for the fans of fantastical romance.

I reread this since I remember it being VERY good when I was 12 years old. Let me say it isn’t 0 star HORRIBLE but it was cringey a lot. I remembered some parts but I was surprised at a few spots that I had forgotten the plot. This is definitely a book made for ages 10-14. At certain points it reminds me of some wattpad books I used to read back then as well if that says anything. I will be continuing rereading the series since I am interested in what happens. It is readable but nothing special.

Good reads been suggesting this book to me for a very long time and I've finally decided to gave in....and boy I am disappointed.

Positives - its an easy read. Something that doesn't strain your brain and is not too over-complicated.

Negatives...where do I start?!

Lets start with main character. I get that most YA books are written so that any girl could relate to the main character, so the main character is rarely well described. But this is a new level of vague. I don't think I know anything about Zara, I don't even thing they mentioned how old she is. Apart from the phobias, there wasn't anything there, AT ALL. And it wasn't just her. Other characters had some characteristics that weren't explored. E.g. Issie suppose to be funny and light and bubbly and apart from one comment about loving bunnies, I didn't get that from her.

The plot is not very well thought through. It felt too rushed in some places and too strained for urban fantasy. I know its not easy to plant fantasy creatures into everyday lives but this is just half asked efforts. The "bad guys" were essentially non-existent. There were suppose to be hundreds of them but you don't get that feeling of being in danger or even being threatened by the number of them. There are huge overuse of famous quotes and sayings. I get the whole "Amnesty international" turn to dark side "plot twist" but it was getting so boring and annoying. Any discussion about anything end up about some "innocent prisoners that need saving". "Someone trying to kill me, but its not as bad as kids dying in Africa, so I shouldn't complain"

The relationship is a typical - love from the first sight, soulmate from the first touch so I won't even go into it. Nothing really out of the ordinary there.

Overall....meh

First off, I don't think this cover does the book justice. I actually was hesitant to read it because the cover seems to portray a different kind of story than Need really is.

This story was really good and I couldn't have imagined how much I would enjoy it! All of the characters met the mark and made the story amazing. There was romance, suspense, a mystery and many twists. Carrie Jones has written a fantastic book and soon to be series.

My favorite character was definitely Nick and I can't wait to read more about him! I also loved the overall plot idea, I don't usually read faerie books, but this one made me swoon.

Overall I read this book and I loved it! Hopefully Captivate will be just as good...

Loved it! It was another one of those that I couldn't put down. I thought it had the right amount of creepiness.

Sudden passing of a love one could do numbers of things to people’s minds. The untimely demise of her stepfather had left Zara deeply depressed, relatively numb and what freak her most is that, she begins to feel like everywhere she goes, someone is there – watching her every moves. Zara’s emotional status causes great concern to her mother, who eventually decides that she would be safer under the care of Grandma Betty in Maine.

But Zara thinks that she knows better and believes that there is nothing this dreary, awkward, cold town could do to help her. Little does she know that a grandma’s love, some eccentric, quirky friends and a hot boy could put some colours to her monotonous life. Things are all right until the stalker starts ruining everything again, convincing Zara that he is more than a product of her imagination. Who is this “stalker” really is? And what is his connection to Zara and her past?

Couple of comparison has been made between this book and Twilight and as I read the first few chapters, I can clearly see why. However, as Need starts picking up its tempo, it begins to separate itself from the other series and set up its very own niche. Truthfully, I am not entirely crazy about this book but the few surprises still make it a good read. One thing that is really unique about Need is Jones’ creativity in relating certain type of phobias with every single chapter in it. The style of writing is very simple, making Need one light, quick read. Another factor that makes me like Need is its characters, which are normal despite the whole circumstances they are all in. The qualities that each character have are clearly portrayed make it easy to distinguish their purposes and roles in the book.

However – to me – Need does come with couple of issues. Its straightforwardness and lack of complexities cause it to be somewhat predictable, which spoil the fun of reading a little bit. By looking at those creepy plotlines used by the author, this book does seem like it has a lot of potential but the overly simplistic discoveries and solutions at the end of the book is really not satisfying. Plus, the way Zara accepts who the stalker really is and how he relates to her are also implausible. I wish that there is a little more depth in this sense and the creepy elements are consistent right to the end, but alas, that didn’t happen.

All in all, despite some of the problems I have with the book, I know I’ll be reading the next chapter since I need to know how the series ends. I believe that those who love paranormal and want to find something to read other than those vampires’ ones will enjoy this book.
