This was written by a historian? Yikes. I'm a historian myself, specializing in this era, albeit based in the US. Very little about this book said "1780s" or "American Revolution" to me; other than the occasional mention of Thomas being "a colonist," or the mention of John Laurens, this book felt largely like it was meant to take place in the late Victorian era. The cover seems to agree with me!

The various ~twists and turns~ in the plot were predictable, downright laughable, or both. And the "romance"? Boring and rushed. You'd think Thomas was a teenage boy and not a doctor in (what I assume to be) his 20s.

The writing was fine, I guess. Nothing spectacular, but nothing too awful - except for Harris constantly calling Farrell "Gallic." I thought perhaps it was an audiobook error, but looking at other reviews, it seems Harris just didn't know the difference between Gallic and Gaelic. Where was her editor?

Why was this called "The Anatomist's Apprentice," by the way? Thomas was hardly an "apprentice" anymore at this point: he was teaching classes and had his own laboratory/office/whatever.

I won't be picking up the rest of the books in this series.
