The book is a good introduction to Nathan Hale. However, the writing seemed a bit simple (for a younger reader) and the pacing was somewhat haphazard. But I did find it original that the book began with Nathan's death and works backwards to how he got there.

The book began with Nathan Hale's hanging. It drew me right in and hooked me from the very first page. Then it all went downhill from there.

I had a hard time seeing why the characters were doing what they did. From the start, Nathan seemed against fighting and war, then all of a sudden he signed up. The spy bit only happened toward the end of the book and a lot of the last half was just moving the characters around, going for historical accuracy and losing the characters in the process. It almost felt like name dropping. If you are going to go through the trouble of mentioning these places and battles, make them mean something.

In the end, I just wanted to be through with the book and had to force myself to read it. This book might have more meaning to someone who loves history and already knows a lot of the facts, so they can fill in all the details themselves.
