I enjoyed the book. It was a humorous and fun read. Although, I didn’t enjoy it as much as his other books.
Zeus is annoying and stupid and meg is insufferable. I really didn’t enjoy her character.
All in all it was a nice book.

I’ll be honest, I had really low expectations for this book. I loved the Percy Jackson series and really enjoyed the Heroes of Olympus series. But the disappointment that was Magnus Chase and the God’s of Asgard book made me start rethinking my love for Rick Riordan. It was quite possible uncle Rick had run out of awesome. But The Hidden Oracle brought me back to the good old days of Camp Half-Blood, and while it wasn’t at the level of the original Percy Jackson it was still very enjoyable. The biggest problem I had with Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard was the inability to distinguish his voice from Percy’s. They were written so similarly that had you read me a few sentences out of context I couldn’t have picked out which character was speaking. Rick Riordan has a very specific way of writing dialog of snarky sarcasm mixed with the middle school humor we never quite outgrew (well some of us at least). While that style made it hard to tell Percy from Magnus, in The Hidden Oracle it’s mixed with Greek God speak. It was an interesting change hearing it coming from Apollo, a 1000 year old god turned mortal. And not just any mortal, a gawky acne covered teenager named Lester Papadopoulos. He hasn’t lost his godly conceitedness though, and it adds so much humor to the book and that helped define him from Percy.

-“But Percy Jackson has always been reliable. You have nothing to fear. Besides, he likes me. I taught him everything he knows.”

She frowned. “You did?”

I found her innocence somewhat charming. So many obvious things she did not know. “Of course. Now let’s go up.”

-“Zeus needed someone to blame, so of course he’d picked the handsomest, most talented, most popular god in the pantheon: me.”

-“It warmed my heart that my children had the right priorities: their skills, their images, their views on YouTube.”

One of my favorite things about Rick Riordan books are the silly cheesy chapter titles and this book didn’t disappoint. Since Apollo is the god of poetry most, if not all, of the titles are written in haikus.

“Used to be goddy Now uptown feeling shoddy Bah, haiku don’t rhyme”

Gah there are so many funny quote… I could just write this entire review in quotes.

The Character development was spot on in this book. Apollo went from being a vain stuck up god-turned-mortal into actually caring about others and risking himself for the good of his children. He’s still a little vain, but I guess that’s part of being human
