I watched the film before I even knew this was a book and loved it so I finally got round to reading it and I am so glad I did! This book was tragically beautiful and comedic in places. It made my heart swoon and break within a page and while I knew it was coming It still made me cry, as did most of the 3rd part of the book lol. Highly recommended this book to anyone who wants something a little different but beware! Your heart will break for Tilly.

I adored this book, the little quirks of humour and the description of the fashion and materials blew me away. It has sadness but light and I enjoyed every page, often laughing out loud for ages over small sections! A lovely Australian read.

I feel that I was able to really understand the dynamics at play in this novel because I was raised in a small town. It tended to get superfluous in parts where the author just described seemingly menial relationships and occurrences in the town, but I understand the necessity of this to creat the small-town atmosphere. I loved the relationship between Tilly and Teddy and the eventual relationship between Tilly and Molly. This is a fun read if you just want a distraction. It was easy to become engrossed in the world of Dungatar.

I had hoped for more from this book, considering it has been used as a VCE text. I was disappointed in the exaggerated stereotypes and mean spirited humour.

While it is clear that this is a town full of miserable people, Tilly’s lesson to them is non-sensical. What happened next? Is she going to pay for her sins? Even a year or two of unpaid bills does not add up to the damage she caused.

Once Tilly was free, it would have made more sense to disappear to be able to enjoy her life elsewhere. The back story of her own experiences was only touched upon.

In the end, it seems as though everyone lost everything. Dark humour, but unsatisfying.
