Upgrading to a four after some thought. It's a good allegory for racism in the US. Would be a good book to teach in high school, if I had it my way ;-)

Felt like I was reading a version of the Korean movie Parasite. But it was a lot less creepy.

4.5

This was a 5 until the ending! It’s a great book that I couldn’t put down. It was mysterious. You can’t tell if the house is haunted or it’s just in the unreliable narrators mind. There’s a corrupt corporation to take into account too. Also a family that doesn’t totally trust each other. Its fantastic and then it just…ends! There’s no resolution. Which is true of life but not how I wanted the book to conclude! So that bums me out but I still highly recommend this book ❤️

Creepy. Upsetting. Real. This book is about a haunted house in a community that has been destroyed by greed, power, classism and racism. My heart was in my throat several times. Great YA horror story.

I did a mix of audiobook and text. This book definitely gave me the spooks when reading it at night. It kept me curious and wanting more. It was a great mix of mental health, fact, and lore. The audiobook was cast well but the narrator didn’t always correctly capture the emotions. Id definitely give it a reread.
