Catch Me by Lisa Gardner

I'm giving this book three stars because it's a good mystery. The problem is that I'm not a fan of mysteries. I always enjoy the set-up, but as the crime is being solved, I get annoyed. Usually the pace changes. Characters who have been puzzled for hundreds of pages have sudden insights. I guess I could quit in the middle and be left wondering which of the red herring characters will actually turn out to be the perp, but I can't seem to do that either.

This was a daily deal on Audible so I'm only out a couple of bucks. Can't complain on that count.

Review posted in MADreads: http://www.madisonpubliclibrary.org/madreads/four-days-someone-going-kill-me

When Boston detective D. D. Warren finds a young woman lingering near a crime scene she's immediately suspicious. When that young woman tells her that she's there because she wants to meet the detective who will most likely investigate her own death, D. D. is still suspicious, but she's also intrigued. Charlene Rosalind Carter Grant tells D. D. that she will be murdered at 8 pm on January 21st, in four days.

While initially D. D. thinks that there's a good chance Charlie Grant is a crackpot, she does listen to her story. And what a story it is. For the past two years a young woman has died on January 21st. In each case there was no sign of forced entry, the women were strangled but not assaulted in any other way, and the crime scenes were meticulously cleaned. The reason Charlie knows she's next is because the two young women were her best friends from childhood. Now Charlie is the only one left. Only she doesn't plan to go quietly.

Charlie's story sounds a little wild, but the details hold up. Her two best friends were murdered one year apart and neither crime was solved. Now D. D.'s concern isn't just in keeping Charlie alive, but in finding out whether Charlie is using her last days to act out a vigilante's revenge. Someone is killing pedophiles in Boston and somehow Charlie seems to always be on the scene.

Lisa Gardner excels at complex plotting and keeping all her narrative threads in hand. And this one is particularly suspenseful because of the deadline for Charlie's death. I happened to be reading Catch Me right around the 21st of January and was on pins and needles. If I have a caveat, it would be that Gardner seems to be trying to top herself with last-minute twists. I hope with her next book she eases up on that just a bit.

What a huge disappointment this turned out to be.

Being a huge fan of this series, I went into this book with high expectations that up until now Gardner had always managed to live up to. This book unfortunately fell flat. Everything about it, the character interactions (DD Warren is usually one of my favorite female protagonists, but here she seemed to be a whiny shell of her former self, the "evil doer" and their story was uninteresting and pretty much the entire mystery aspect was boring.

One of the most disappointing reads of 2012 for me.

I really liked Charlie! Also - This was one of the DD books that I figured out early on so I tacked on an extra star for that! (I NEVER figure it out!)
