As many of you know, I am addicted to Debbie Herbert‘s books, but I didn’t expect to love Bayou Wolf as much as I have her other books. Why? This novel’s heroine, Tallulah Silver, was a secondary character in an earlier novel (Bayou Shadow Hunter) in the Bayou Magic series, and I found her to be infuriating for most of that novel. This was the first and only of Debbie’s books that I’ve stepped into with any amount of skepticism at the outset, and I’m delighted to report that Bayou Wolf washed that skepticism away by the end of the first page.
Bayou Wolf paints a much more vulnerable, human portrait of Tallulah that I was easily able to relate to. She’s wounded and deeply flawed, which makes her all the more real and endearing to me.
Now, on to our hero! I fell head-over-heels in LOVE with Payton Rodgers as I was reading this book! (Probably because he reminds me a lot of my amazing husband, but I’m heavily biased on that subject.) I love that Payton is a genuinely good, hardworking man in spite of his flaws and insecurities. It was incredibly easy for me to fall in love with that character, and with the journey he and Tallulah take together on their way to finding true love.
As always, I adore the setting (Bayou La Siryna) because it speaks to this Southern Alabama native on a soul-deep level. Bayou La Siryna is like home to me in more ways than one, and Debbie Herbert paints a perfect picture of just how enchanting places like my hometown can be.
Overall, I absolutely adored this book! It’s another supernatural hit from Debbie Herbert, in my book.
