In Gwen’s latest adventure, it seems that things are looking up when she meets a handsome young witch on her vacation, one who is seemingly enamored with her. Beneath the surface, however, things are not as they seem. Dmitry is at work again, pulling the strings behind Gwen’s lover, Shane. With the new line of dead bodies turning up, Gwen hardly suspects a thing is off with her new romance. When she figures out that the connections between the murders involve her, Gwen is faced once again with Fannie in a new battle that not only endangers her but the lives of everyone she loves.

I love how throughout everything Gwen goes through that she remains true to herself and is capable of holding onto those she loves. It’s for this reason that I really hated Shane’s character and the way he manipulated her though his character was very well written. This book, like the previous in the series, was loaded with suspense, and I can’t wait to see where the author takes poor Gwen next.

Fateful Attractions is the third book in the Elemental Witch Trials and the first I have read.

There were some questions I had that I felt might be answered if I read the first two books first, but given the questions I still had at the end of the book (as did some of the characters) I'm not sure they would have been! Still, it is certainly a book you can read by itself. I was able to follow the plot and pick up who all the characters were easily. I'm sure the future books will be answering more questions.

It is a book that will keep you interested and the pages turning to an action packed last third of the book. The characters develop slowly, giving time for their feelings for each other to progress and develop nicely. I was unsure about the motives of one character in particular, which I like, as it keeps you guessing as to who exactly he is. I wondered if he were truly helping or had his own evil agenda! I will not spill the beans on that outcome here, you will have to read the book.

I found it interesting to learn as the book progressed, exactly what kind of creatures characters in the book were and what abilities they had. The characters had differing levels of evilness, some to gain an advantage that suits their situation and others that just hold a hatred over centuries.

If you love witches, vampires and other beasties, mixed with a plot twisting whodunnit, then this is the book for you.

I probably should have started this series at book one, because I was lost in the huge cast of characters, not knowing who was who or what their relationships were with each other. Over the course of the story it became clear that they all loved Gwen. Everyone loves Gwen, but I was not quite sure what it was about her that led her to have such a large harem of smitten men (whether human or some variety of monster.) Sadly the one character who I did connect with, because there was something of the trickster about him, ended up being gruesomely killed for the angst at the end, so that didn't warm my heart.

The writing is not great. It's frequently confusing who is doing what to whom at whose behest. You do have to have an intimate knowledge of who all the men and monsters are to be able to follow any of the reasoning of what is going on. There's a lot of head hopping from one character's point of view to the other which may bug me more as an author than it would bug a normal reader.

On the plus side, it's very fast paced and it's rarely boring. It builds to an exciting climax (where it kills off my favourite character). And I imagine I would like it more if I had read the first two in the series first. For that reason, not to be unfair, I've given it an extra star.

Another powerful, dark story in the series. Sweet, gentle Gwen is in for some more tough love, and lots of manipulation. Dmitry, the controlling vampire who "owns" Gwen, has even worse plans for her life. Be prepared for more violence (not excessively graphic), gruesome deaths, and love and betrayal -- all aimed at Gwen. You'll feel her pain and watch her grow in her powers as she tries to take some control back in her life. You'll cheer her on and wait for the moment when she understands the full extent of her manipulation and hope she pays back all those men in her life who make her life so miserable. Well done and enjoyable tale.
