DNF at 20%.

Honestly I’m SO bored.

This book feels like a very basic story that doesn’t really bring anything new or interesting to the table. While reading, I went “I feel like I’ve read this before even though I haven’t.”

Vanja is a pompous character who doesn’t care about others. She isn’t empathetic at all and I can’t find anything I like about her. “I’m such a cool thief - watch me steal from all these rich people right under their noses!”

And god, she feels so juvenile too? I don’t like the humor in this book. It’s not witty; it’s silly. 🙃

Also, just going to throw this out there - the first few chapters have SO many italicized words for emphasis (not the German names, but like actual words.) and that just took me right out of the story. I never knew that was a pet peeve of mine until now. That does ease up past ch 5 or so - but at this point I’m so bored I just don’t care.

And yeah, I feel bad for Gisele. 🤷‍♀️ So sue me.

*3.5*

I listened to this for a Discord / Youtube related book club, and after attending a long video/livestream for it, I'm editing my rating to 3.5 stars. It was fine, but it felt drawn out and I'm questioning why there's going to be a sequel. I appreciated the demisexual representation and lesbian representation, but I almost wish they could have been one and the same for the princess and had more time with her, but also I think I would have enjoyed it more from her perspective. I think I preferred the second half to the first half but I didn't super love either half of it. I like the idea of Death and Fate personified and lesbian godmothers but again, I would have loved even more time with them and the consequences of being connected.
