Witty but dark and deep, original, creative and painfully relatable in many parts, Zoe Thorogood’s So Lonely at the Centre of the Earth definitely goes into my favourite books of all times.
It’s a look inside the author’s mind, with her thoughts, even the intrusive and unusual ones, and her past, all combined in six months of her life, from July 2021 to December 2021.
Depression, anxious thoughts about the future and a difficult past are narrated without rhetoric, without trying to convey pity but rather in a way that doesn’t take itself so seriously. At the same time though it can talk about the experience of many others in such a sincere and human way, despite the “monsters” and the strangeness that inhabit the panels.
The imagery used by Thorogood to represent her darkest aspects of her mind felt suitable for her experience but can be also accepted by every tipe of reader. This graphic novel has it all: depth and comedy, uniqueness, alternative compositions and style and profound meaning.
For someone So lonely at the centre of the Earth might feel “too much”, exaggerated and over the top…but to me this spoke in ways almost no book has ever done for me. It’s a book for the underdogs, the little kids who were never understood by anyone, the aliens with human flesh and the people with worms crawling on their skin (if you know you know).
Thank you Zoe, i hope you understand how amazing you are.

“I’m slowly starting to realize that when my brain purposes suicide, what it really means is it wants to go someplace else, where it can exist formless and free, where time flows differently and things make sense.”
Grabbed this at a comic shop on a whim because I flipped through the pages and really related to what I saw. I laughed, I cried, I read this in a day. I love Thorogood’s use of multimedia and art styles, it adds to the dimension of this meta memoir. It can be a little self serving and pretentious at times with an almost too hyper aware self commentary, but I enjoyed it. Definitely related to this as a twenty something who doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing with her life.

I normally don't read autobiographical comics but this one is very good, I really liked the art style and the designs of the characters and creatures and most of the artwork is very beautiful.
Thanks to Image Comics and NetGalley for the ARC.

7/10 - was bored the whole time but that’s because it felt like she was inside my mind. Perfectly encapsulates what it’s like having depression, and all the self-obsession/self-loathing that comes with it. Illustrations were unreal.

Introspective and unflinching Zoe Thorogood depicts the realities of depression, self deprecation, imposter syndrome, mental health, and the struggle feeling like you don't fit in anywhere. A little chaotic at times but accurately describes the weight of feeling as though your mental health is making it impossible for the people around you to love and understand you. Reading this feels like being given a cup of your favorite drink and sitting with your favorite person in a comfortable silence: full of healing and understanding.
