I throughly enjoyed this book. I found the narrator, Cécile, to be extremely humorous and at times insightful. It was a pleasant experience to view the various characters through Cécile’s eyes, her opinions of them clashing with one another even in the same paragraph. And then, a pretty shocking ending!

This book can definitely be read in one sitting. However, to long for the events to unfold, one ought to approach it from a distance, slowly, and dumbly. Françoise Sagan wrote this book when she was 18 years old and my opinion is that you can only justify the ramblings of a 17 year old sociopath (the character Cécile in the book) when the writer herself is around the same age (how creepy if, say, a middle-aged man had written the deep feelings of a 12 year old girl? *Lolita*.) If I look at my diary when I was around that age, the thoughts and feelings will sound similar to Cécile's and so I'm inclined to sympathize with the author. The story itself was simple and slightly entertaining. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who has a short train ride coming up with nothing of significance to read.
