Fantastic art is a given with David Wiesner. So is the trippy ordinary-becomes-extraordinary thing. The only thing that holds me back from really loving Wiesner's books is that they can seem a little too serious, like they're art objects more than lovable stories. What I like about this particular David Wiesner book is the quirky sense of humor. Wiesner having fun! Yay!

Max wants to be able to paint like Arthur but Max is still learning the basics of painting. When Max makes the mistake of literally painting Art, things get a little complicated and a little meta. Now Max must learn about colors and lines the difficult way.
This book was so much fun and it was such a beautiful book, too. I loved reading it and it's definitely one that will be reread.

A cute art themed story about 2 lizards. I love how they showed various types of art, and referenced a few other art related items. Middle grade elementary would probably like this best, as younger might not understand what is happening in the story.

Not a great book for a read aloud but the art is worth 5 stars alone. I enjoyed the story, but as with most Wisener books, the art captures my attention fully.

Peculiar but awesome, which is a reasonable expectation from any Wiesner book. The idea of painting a fellow being's form is exploded in this way, to the point of unraveling. At which point the book goes meta a-la Daffy Duck. Kind of mind-blowing.

I can see this book getting used in lots of art classes and programs because it would be hard not to get inspired to try a few of these art techniques. Very fun!
