The Joker has someone cut off his face, then disappears for a year. When he comes back, his face is strapped back on and he goes after all of Batman's allies: Catwoman, Batgirl and all 4 dudes that have been Robin. His claim is that they are making Batman weak and they need to be taken out so that he and Batman can resume their epic battle.

I must say I do not care for this sadistic twist. The Joker has been a cerebral villain up till this point. Sure, his brand of cerebral-ness is that of a madman, but still it was never about the gross-out. I think that this twist is geared towards fans of the Saw movies. It's shocking not because it's clever but because it's grotesque.

This collection is all of the side Bat titles and actually feature Batman very little. So perhaps I'll like the Batman: Death of the Family better this I liked this one. But I'm saddened by the change in a once great villain.

The added perspectives didn’t do much for enhancing the original story. In fact, they often felt convoluted and dry.
However there was some cool and genuine moments, but wouldn’t say the 450+ page read is necessary to get the most from the story. You’ll be more than fine with just reading the original material and calling it a day.
