5 stars implies that I recommend it, and I really don’t. If you aren’t gonna tough it out, then it isn’t worth your time, but if you make it to the end, it’s truly life changing. I am better for having read this book.

“Everything bad that ever happened to him happened because he couldn’t read.”
One of the most impactful  books I have ever read. Morrison always reminds me just how much power words can hold.

very challenging novel thematically, but great writing and lesson. i found most of the book slow and the ending rushed, which is why i gave it the rating i did. overall though, worth a read as it carries a valuable lesson!

I can confidently say: I was touched. I don't know if I was moved, but in another life I'm sure there's a version of me, either in another universe or that lives hidden in the back of my own mind now, who would have weeped. Maybe I was moved. I get it. I think I know what that feels like.

I thought this book was pretty decent. I like Toni Morrison's writing a lot. I believe she writes in a way that is rather poetic and makes the book flow easily. However, what I do not like about the writing is how the book is formatted. I find that in Morrison's books the central theme featured in the title is never mentioned on as grand as a platform I'm expecting. For example, in [b:The Bluest Eye|11337|The Bluest Eye|Toni Morrison|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388208495l/11337._SX50_.jpg|1987778], the topic of blue eyes is only mentioned in passing, and I felt like that was similar in this book. When Solomon is introduced, his character has a large impact on the storyline, but I wish there was more background with him. I was also not a big fan of the open-ended ending. In books that can get hard to follow like this one, I would've preferred a more finite ending. Besides those points, I enjoyed the writing and the second half of the book, but it definitely would've been more enjoyable and satisfying to finish if the ending wasn't open-ended.
