I liked The Wednesday Wars more... but I gotta admit this one had its own charms... Doug Swieteck is a great character. In fact, I would've fallen in love with this kid if he wasn't such a skinny thug. Kidding. I would want him as my brother.

My fave part - when Lucas came home from Vietnam and his family saw him for the first time. I seriously bawled my eyes out while reading that part. I also sympathized with Christopher... :( I always thought he had something good in him.

I would recommend this book for those who wants to learn the realities of life through the eyes of a skinny thug who likes to draw birds, drink an extremely cold coke with the ice going down its side, do deliveries on Saturdays, shriek like an insane woman who has been locked in an attic for a great many years AND play Helen Burns in JANE EYRE. ^^

I'm not sure anymore what I was expecting from this book, but Schmidt has certainly surpassed them. I'm not quite sure how to adequately convey just how awesome this book is. The writing is very interesting - conversational yet powerful and polished. Doug is a dynamic, likable character and I loved watching his relationships with his brothers, father, teachers, and neighbors evolve as the story progressed.
