Some books are made with the explicit intention of being converted into a movie. "Therapy" by Sebastian Fitzek seems to be one of them.
Set in modern-day Berlin, the story covers the traumatic life experience of an uber-rich Berlin couple, a psychiatrist and a consultant, whose daughter has disappeared. This book is gripping; each chapter leaves you wanting more, and I managed to read the entire 200-page book in one evening, a feat I haven’t achieved in ten years.
Most of the book takes place on a small North Sea island called Parkum. Here, the protagonist meets a possibly dangerous woman named Anna Glass, who is intent on becoming his patient. The book beautifully integrates the harsh weather of an off-season Parkum with the protagonist's progressively worsening health. I believe this is the novel’s biggest strength. Without divulging one of the twists, I can say that once you reach that twist, the entire imagery makes complete sense and ends up being the highlight of the novel and leaves you in awe.
However, my biggest issue was the introduction of numerous twists towards the end. Many felt like they were included just to make the ending unpredictable, lacking organic integration into the story. The writer also relies heavily on plot armor to make things happen. While you later realize the reasoning behind this, and it somewhat explains the developments, during the initial reading you may find these new twists a bit too convenient.
The book’s structure, with short chapters that often end in cliffhangers, manages to capture the readers interest and almost forces them to jump to the next chapter. The writing is clean and straightforward, avoiding flowery language.
In short, this book provides a gripping read but is not something that will stay with you or change you in any way. Overall, "Therapy" is an ordinary psychological thriller that goes a bit too far with unnecessary twists.
