Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell

I wanted to like this, a Peter Pan retelling with a charming version of captain hook? Once Upon a Time fans rejoice! but then...it read like a fanfic. The "romance" felt forced, the characters felt flat and almost unlikable and the ending came on rushed. like the author decided she had run out of time and just had to end everything. Maybe if this had been stretched out longer I would have felt better about it.

DNF. I just can't read this book. It was so confusing, and the romance was unbelievable.

I loved it but it needed to be a duology to really flesh out the characters and world.

This book was torturous to read. It was incredibly slow, it didn't start to pick-up until after page 200. And saying it "picked-up" is a stretch. At no point did I get lost in the book, I struggled to get into it. Every page I turned felt like a victory. When I did get to the end the antagonists were all defeated in the span of 5 pages - Pan was the bad guy and then he was suddenly defeated by Fiona without any explanation of how, then Fiona was the bad guy for a brief moment (a page maybe?) before she was defeated, and then the Queen showed up and was defeated just as quickly. If it was so easy to defeat all these bad guys why was the book 350 pages?

If I hadn't been trying to get back into reading I would have DNF'd this book before finishing the first chapter. It was really painful.

I so wanted to like this book. I've never read a Peter Pan retelling. I like the flip it did with Peter Pan but that's the only thing I liked. I hated all the characters .. and good lord everyone died! This book was extremely sad. I hate that I feel depressed after reading a book. I want happiness. So this one just wasn't for me.

Why the fuck did I feel the need of buying this book.

I love Once Upon A Time. I am not ashamed to say that I am shipping Captain Swan since day one.

BUT WHAT THE HECK WAS THIS BOOK.

I liked the story at the beginning, I liked the dark world Gwen was thrown into, I loved Captain Hook (I am just calling him this because he reminded me so much of fucking Kilian Jones) and I also kinda liked the writing because it was easy to read and fitted the story perfectly.

But the bad, yessas.

First of all, fucking Gwen. I hated her since day one when she blew out the candle in her home. Like, girl, you were repeatedly told TO LET THE CANDLE BURN and here you go.

Another thing was the world building that was very well done in the beginning but then with the Queen and the Dark Lord and her story and no, just no it was too confusing too much to handle.

Also, the plottwists that weren't plottwists because meh. At one point I didn't care anymore where the story was going and
Spoiler at one point the Queen was good and then she was evil and Pan was good, like wtf?

I don't want to say that the ending was a complete mess, but it was to be honest. As much as I am a sucker for a happy ending it
Spoiler would have been better if Gwen would have accepted her fate as the new Queen. It would have fitted to her powers and she could have saved "Rowan". But no. We got a cheesy happy ending.

Overall I liked the book because of it's darkness, it's intriguing world but I disliked it because of Gwen and some other things I mentioned before.

Very disappointing read.
I don't even know where to begin with.

The main character-Gwen, was weak and easy to fool. She went from being jealous at Olivia because of Pan to 'loving' the Captain in a matter of pages. The entire 'romance'-thing was just off.
The portraying of Pan as the villain was also unconvincing and badly executed even though I liked the concept of having HIM as the bad guy.

The plot twist were predictable, overly simplified and terribly done plus, the 'communicating with Neverland'-magic system was just BAD BAD BAD!!!
I liked some of the monsters (like the killing mermaids and the Dark Ones, in general) and I thought the writing was okay. I also appreciated how action-packed and fast-paced this book was.

Overall, this is one big fat MEH of a retelling.
