This was interesting although I'll admit I was a little lost at times, since I didn't recognize most of the names mentioned. It moved at a good clip, had some funny quips.
But oh boy, so many fucked up literary/artistic men who expect the women in their lives to manage all their emotional needs.

1913 is an anecdotal retelling of the same year, month by month, through the eyes of several artists, politicians, royals, psychoanalysts, philosophers, authors, lovers, haters and other well known people of that time period. Admittedly it has a stark focus on Europe, which - given the turmoil happening in this geographical era shortly thereafter and the fact that the author is German himself - makes a lot of sense. The concept in general is thereby fantastic, as Florian Illies must have combed through thousands of newspaper articles, diary entries and interviews from that year to retell these hundreds of little anecdotes in an entertaining way, more than a century later.
So we follow the likes of Georg Trakl, Oskar Kokoschka, Alma Mahler, Else Lasker-Schüler, Robert Musil … and herein lies the big problem I had with this book: If you are not familiar with these (arguably big) names of the time, then shame on you, because there is absolutely no handholding in this book to give you at least a vague idea of who these people are and why you should care about them. And the longer the book went on, the less I did care and therefor started to selectively read only the stories about names and people I already knew, as I was tired of looking them all up. If you are really, really familiar with these sort of artists of this particular time period in this particular geographical area, then congratulations, you will have a great time with this one - the rest will have to do a lot of googling and Wikipedia side-reading though.
It would be unfair not to mention that there are also some stories in here about much more well-known names, such as Franz Kafka, Sigmund Freud, Picasso, Adolf H., or Franz Ferdinand, but these are far and few between.
The anecdotes themselves then also have a wide range of quality, from absolutely trivial to well entertaining. Occasionally, the author tries to tell coherent storylines throughout the year, but the vast majority of these little stories have no connection to each other. Which in and of itself is fine, and allowed for this book to be read in little bite-sized chunks, but in the end it thoroughly missed a coherent overall plot to care for. There was one recurring plot point regarding the Mona Lisa though, which came to a really surprising and good-to-know conclusion in the end.
What was surprisingly almost completely missing were references to the brewing political turmoil happening outside the avant-garde. With the following year being the beginning of WWI, I would have either wished for this book to shift its 12 month period to cover August 1913 to August 1914 instead, or to shift its focus slightly away from the cultural happenings to include some of the political conflicts arising on the sidelines. This would have given the whole book more depth and meaning in my mind.
The way it is now, 1913 transports a superb sense of what life was like back then, but only if you care or are already familiar with its bohemian protagonists the author chose to spotlight here.

This was so beautifully written and translated! It got a bit hard to follow at times with so many different people featuring but the imagery and atmosphere more than made up for it.

Πριν το διαβάσω νόμιζα ότι είναι μυθιστόρημα. Είναι όμως περισσότερο ιστορία. Είναι μια ιστορία προσώπων, σημαντικών για την πολιτική, τα γράμματα και τις τέχνες, μέσα σε μία χρονιά, το 1913.
Ο συγγραφέας έχει τουλάχιστον πέντε σελίδες βιβλιογραφία, από βιογραφίες, αυτοβιογραφίες, προσωπικά γράμματα ή τελος πάντων ό,τι προσωπικό στοιχείο μπορούσε να δέσει αρμονικά για να προκύψει αυτό το εξαιρετικό αποτέλεσμα.
Οι ομοιότητες και οι διαφορές με τον Δούναβη του Μάγκρις. Από τις πρώτες σελίδες μου θύμισε αυτό το σπουδαίο βιβλίο, που πλέον τα κατατάσσω στις πηγές γνώσεων. Το σημείο αναφοράς του Ίλις είναι οι άνθρωποι, ενώ του Μάγκρις μία περιοχή ανά τους αιώνες και πως αυτή διαμόρφωσε κουλτούρες, ιστορία και συνεπώς τους ανθρώπους.
Στο παρόν βιβλίο δεν έχουμε απλώς ξεκάρφωτες ιστορίες, αλλά με τεχνικές μυθοπλασίας, απόλυτα επιτυχείς, κατά κάποιο τρόπο σύνδεση των ιστοριών, που κάνει την φαντασία του αναγνώστη να οργιάζει. Στις αρχές του 1913, Χίτλερ, Στάλιν, Τίτο, ο καθένας για ξεχωριστούς λόγους βρέθηκαν στην Βιέννη και σύχναζαν στους κήπους των ανακτόρων Σενμπρούν και πιθανώς να είχανε γνωριστεί. Μετά το καλοκαίρι βρέθηκαν στην Τεργέστη για πολύ λίγο, Τζόυς, Κάφκα και Ρίλκε (αν δεν κάνω λάθος), πιθανώς πίνοντας τον καφέ τους στο ίδιο καφενείο.
Είμαι πεπεισμένος ότι ο συγγραφέας έκανε τρομερή έρευνα και δεν του έχει ξεφύγει το παραμικρό. Κι αυτό το λέω έχοντας πρόσφατα διαβάσει την βιογραφία του Τζόυς από τον Έλμαν (βρίσκεται στη βιβλιογραφία) και ισχύουν όλα κατά γράμμα.
Το σπουδαιότερο για μένα είναι οι λίστες από συγγραφείς που έκανα, τους οποίους είτε είχα ακουστά είτε δεν γνώριζα καθόλου. Επίσης, διαβάζοντας της εξής ιστορία: εν έτει 1913 συλλαμβάνεται συμμετέχοντας σε επεισόδια ένας πιτσιρικάς ονόματι Λουίς Άρμστρονγκ. Ο διευθυντής των φυλακών το πρώτο πράγμα που σκέφτηκε για να τον συμμορφώσει ήταν να του δώσει μία τρομπέτα. Αυτό ήταν. Στο τέλος του ίδιου έτους γοητευμένος ξεκινούσε μια λαμπρή καριέρα, συνειδητοποίησα το πόσο σημαντικές είναι κάποιες βιογραφίες.
