this is not what i was expecting at all! i had such high expectations for this since it is well-loved in the community and i completely understand why. the world-building was immaculate, characters were well-rounded, and everything was cohesive. the side characters are such an integral part of the story and every single relationship (parental, sibling, friendship, and romantic) were so interesting to learn about. i love a good morally grey FMC and jude is no exception. i love her characterization! the one thing i didnt' expect was how brutal the bullying was. tell me why i was livid with all the horrors jude was subjected to by cardan and his troop - absolute insanity, i could never be as tough as jude fr fr. the enemies to lovers is taking its time with this one. i have grown to somewhat like cardan towards the end, however, there's still a long was to go unfortunately. while it felt slow at times, i understand that the build-up is essential. i am greatly looking forward to the rest of the series!

An excellent fantasy. A great take on folklore and tons of fun. Emotional and intriguing plot lines.

I still enjoy some YA books, but I am definitely too old for this one. A host of the problematic bully-lover dynamics that I can't stand. Seriously, putting that shit in YA books is irresposible. And a really disinteresting and weirdly unsympathetic narrator/mc. Maybe it's just laying groundwork for somebody to actually have growth in later books, but... I do not care. It also moves so slowly. I got so bored of waiting for the story to actually progress that I read the synopsis on wikipedia to convince myself to keep going (and usually I hate spoilers). Would not have finished the book at all if it hadn't been a recco, but now I'm wishing I hadn't so I wouldn't have to tell the recommender how I feel about it.

this book gagged me at every turn tbh. multiple times there were twists where i physically put the book down and gasped and then i had to pick it back up and continue reading immediately.
i like that in this book, the reader is really eased into the court politics. i like fantasy, but struggle with high fantasy because it feels like i need to take notes to keep track of all the drama. in this book, it built up naturally and took you along the ride WITH the characters. also i love how holly black writes. amen. i will be reading the next two books asap
