This was my first ‘real’ Stephen King book (not including elevation). I found it so incredibly drawn out and loooong. Partly, this came by since the description on the back, which originally drew me to the book, only really covered the first 40 pages.
From there we spend about 250 pages of her drinking a glass of water, thinking about friends and family, sleeping and meeting a dog. The extremely descriptive nature of the language in Stephen King books, made the descent into the story so incredibly slow I found it hard to pick up. The last 100 or so pages were where the story picked up. The eclipse, the escape and the aftermath are all covered here, and after the slow pace of the last 2/3 of this book, this last part kept me glued to the pages and biting my nails. Thus, I suppose there is a purpose to the madness, through I’m not sure I would count it as worth it. I may try another one, which is deemed more fast paced or with a regularly spaced plot.

This book is a beautiful and traumatizing expression of trauma (sexual trauma specifically) and of the mind’s internal family system which Stephen King writes so accurately and in such a personifying way. It was also the most triggering book I’ve ever read and I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who is triggered by sexual abuse/rape or anyone who doesn’t want to read gore and body horror.

Get down, Disco Gerald!”

i feel like this is one king could have probably kept in the drawers, idk the writing and ‘plot’ to me just seemed very offhand (mind the pun💀) and i very much got the feeling nothing was planned out too deeply, just all a bit here and there ya know. as much as i was enraptured reading it, i wouldn’t say it was something i majorly enjoyed, if that’s even the right word to use for a book like this hahaha! i love king and his work and i think he has a godlike talent for writing but i just wouldn’t use this particular work of his as an example for that…

This book was an absolute beast of a story. I burned through this book so quickly and it was difficult to put down, yet I didn’t want to keep going it was so disturbing. I shaved off a few points due to the sheer amount of incest in this book. I think that this could serve as a legitimate plot point, but in the case of this book it seemed to be purely shock factor. Despite this, the story was extremely well written and very addictive.

This book was overwhelming to say the least. I am usually fine when it comes to reading books with very dark themes, but this was too much for me. When I finished it, I definitely regretted reading it, but thinking on it, it certainly set new boundaries for me when it came to serious topics. If thinking about reading PLEASE read the trigger warnings before, I went into this blind and I kind of regret it. Definitely a book I will only ever read once.
